Fareham began as a Saxon village originally called Ferneham - meaning the village by the ferns. Well known for its tanning industry in the late 17th century and later for its iron foundry and brickworks. Eventually becoming a market town Fareham is now well known for its beautiful Georgian buildings, excellent shopping facilities and an array of superb restaurants.
